The Calibre 89 was based on IWCs legendary calibre 83, itself introduced in 1939. Designed byAlbert Pellaton, formally of Vacheron Constantin, the launch of the calibre 89 in 1946 signified a re-birth of IWC. As an interesting side note, as this calibre was being designed part of the IWC factory still stood in ruin having been bombed during the war. IWC's resilience during this periodmay go some way to explaining the resilience of the movement it produced!

The IWC calibre 89 answered the call of the British Ministry of Defence for a set of watches with more stringent requirements than previous ATP (Army Trade Pattern) branded watches. These new watches, marked with WWW (Watch, Wrist, Waterproof) were produced by a dozen manufacturers (their watches known as the "Dirty Dozen") with IWC's calibre 89 regarded as arguably the most robust with its Mark XI issued for over 30 years.
